Though so much remains to be done, San Benedetto, Outside the Walls has seen many improvements this year. Having finally signed the deed of purchase with the diocese in July, monks and local lay volunteers began work in August to clear the forest which had grown up inside the building. Once we had made the work space approachable, a professional crew came in for the famous messa in sicurezza, an Italian term which means tearing down all that is dangerous and propping up all that can be salvaged.
Now, as we begin the laborious task of funding the project, we are also working with the architects to prepare the designs for the new monastery. Many architectural decisions must still be made but the property continues to awe architect and visitor alike. Its breathtaking view and tranquility inspire us to keep going forward.
